The fifth and youngest child in a musically gifted family, Lionel Frederick Cole began playing the piano when he was 5 or 6 years old. His three brothers, Eddy, Ike and Nat (who was 12 years older) were all musicians and the Cole house was awash in music-making. Freddy's own skills at the keyboard eventually took him to the Juilliard School of Music in New York.
